Counseling & Advising

Articulation

Articulation is how courses transfer for the purposes of admission, transferable units, general education, or major preparation. Articulation agreements between community colleges and CSUs (California State University) and UCs (University of California are available on the ASSIST.org website.

Common Course Numbering

To simplify credit transfer between institutions, California Community Colleges have adopted a statewide numbering system through the Common Course Numbering project (AB 1111). This system will eventually provide a standardized set of subjects and course numbers across all California Community Colleges, ensuring that equivalent courses have the same identifier, regardless of the college offering them. The first six of these courses (at minimum) are being implemented statewide in Fall 2025. Additional courses will be converted to commonly numbered courses over the next several years.

The Common Course Numbering system helps students plan their academic journeys with confidence, particularly when transferring to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems. This initiative supports seamless articulation agreements and reinforces consistency across the state's diverse community colleges. By aligning course numbers, students can more easily identify transferable credits, reducing confusion and streamlining their educational pathways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this new version of the class harder?

No, it has just been better aligned with the curriculum being taught statewide. It is considered equivalent to it's previous version of the class.

What does this mean for Summer/Fall 25 registration?

Summer 2025 course numbers will remain unchanged while Fall 2025 courses will reflect the new numbering. For example, if you're interested in enrolling in MATH 18 Introduction to Statistics, you will look up MATH 18 as usual.  However, if you're looking for that course in Fall 2025, you will need to look for STAT C1000 instead.

What will appear on my Butte College transcript?

Students will see the old course number for any classes taken during or before Summer 2025.  On or after Fall 2025, students will see the new common course number.

What does the "C" mean at the beginning of the new course numbers?

The "C" stands for "Common," meaning that this course number is the same at every California Community College across the state.

What does the "E" mean at the end of some course numbers?

The "E" stands for "Embedded Support." This is the same as our "S" courses such as Math 18s that include additional in-class time to ask questions and get more hands-on instruction.

I still have questions. Who can I talk to?

Excellent question! A Butte College counselor would be happy to help. You can schedule from the Counseling & Advising home page.
